A GST tax invoice for photography services needs your name, address and GSTIN, a unique invoice number and date, the client's details, a description of the service with its SAC code, the taxable value, the tax split into CGST and SGST or into IGST, and the total. Exact requirements and rates change, so check the current rules on the GST portal or with your accountant.

This post lists the fields, explains the tax split and shows an example. It is general information, not tax advice.

Fields a tax invoice needs

The usual list for a registered supplier:

  1. Your legal or trade name, address and GSTIN.
  2. The words "Tax Invoice".
  3. A unique, sequential invoice number, within the limits of the rules.
  4. Invoice date.
  5. Client name, address and GSTIN if they are registered. For unregistered clients, other details may apply.
  6. Place of supply, with the state.
  7. Description of the service, such as "Wedding photography coverage, 12 and 13 February".
  8. SAC code.
  9. Taxable value, any discount, and the rate and amount of each tax.
  10. Total invoice value, in figures and, for some invoices, in words.
  11. Signature or digital signature where required.

Some small taxpayers or special schemes issue different documents, such as a bill of supply. That depends on how you are registered.

SAC code, and why to verify it

Services use a Service Accounting Code, called SAC. Photography services have a heading in that list. Do not copy a number from a blog post, including this one. Look it up on the GST portal or ask your accountant, because:

  • Codes can be revised.
  • Related services, such as album design or video, may sit under other headings.
  • The tax rate depends on the code and the current notifications.

If your invoice bundles different services, ask your accountant whether to split them.

CGST, SGST and IGST

The tax split depends on place of supply.

  • Same state: you charge CGST and SGST, each at half of the total GST rate.
  • Different state: you charge IGST at the full rate.

For a destination wedding in another state, check the place-of-supply rules. They are not always the obvious answer. Photography done at an event may follow a different rule than a service delivered online.

Show each tax on its own line with its rate. Do not hide it inside a single lump sum unless your prices are tax-inclusive, and even then show the breakup.

Example invoice

This is an example with made-up values and a placeholder rate. Use the current rate for your business.

ItemValue
Tax Invoice no.2026-27/014
Date5 Feb 2027
SupplierStudio name, address, GSTIN
ClientClient name, address
Place of supplySame state as supplier
ServiceWedding photography coverage, 2 days
SACAs verified on the GST portal
Taxable value100,000
CGST at 9%9,000
SGST at 9%9,000
Total118,000

For a client in a different state, the tax lines would read "IGST at 18%: 18,000", with the same total. The rate here is only for illustration. Confirm the current one.

Common slips

  • Skipping the invoice number sequence or reusing numbers.
  • Wrong place of supply, which flips CGST and SGST against IGST.
  • Missing client GSTIN for a business client who wants input credit.
  • Charging GST on advance payments without a receipt voucher or proper treatment. Ask your accountant how advances should be handled.
  • Mixing amounts quoted with and without tax.

If you also sell to the US or UK, sales tax in the US works very differently. For the wider picture, see our notes on bookkeeping basics and the first-year business checklist.

How ClickBook helps

ClickBook lets you set up sales tax, VAT or GST your own way and works in any currency, so your invoices carry the tax lines you choose. It does not replace advice from an accountant. See how it looks in the demo.

Keep it simple

Use one invoice template, check it with your accountant once, and then change only the variable fields. Most errors come from retyping the fixed ones.

Practical habits for cleaner invoices

A few routines help, whatever your registration status.

  • Collect GSTIN and address at booking, in the same form as the proposal. Chasing them after the wedding is slow.
  • Quote clearly. Say on the proposal whether the price is inclusive or exclusive of GST. Example: "Total 100,000 plus GST as applicable."
  • Issue invoices at each payment point, following your accountant's guidance on advances, rather than a single invoice at the end.
  • Keep credit notes for refunds or cancellations, so the original invoice stays untouched.
  • Export a monthly list of invoices for your accountant. They will find errors much faster than you will at year end.

If your turnover is near the registration limit, ask your accountant before you take a large booking. Timing can change what you owe.

Frequently asked questions

Do all photographers in India need to issue a GST invoice?

Only if you are registered or required to register, which depends on your turnover and other conditions. Check the current thresholds and rules with a chartered accountant or the GST portal.

Which SAC code applies to photography services?

Photography services have their own heading in the service accounting code list, but codes and rates are revised. Confirm the current one on the official GST portal or with your accountant before using it.

When is IGST charged instead of CGST and SGST?

Generally IGST applies when the place of supply is in a different state from yours, and CGST plus SGST when it is in the same state. Place-of-supply rules have exceptions, so verify for each case.

How long should I keep invoices?

Keep records for the period your local rules require. Your accountant can tell you how long that is.
