Preparing Couples for an Engagement or Pre-Wedding Shoot
What to send couples before an engagement session: outfits, timing, locations and how to relax on camera.
In this article
Send couples a short guide a week or two before the engagement or pre-wedding shoot. It should cover what to wear, where and when to meet, what will happen and how to relax. Couples who know what to expect arrive calmer, and calm couples give you better photographs.
Why prep matters
An engagement session is often the first time a couple has been photographed together by a professional. Many feel awkward, and that awkwardness shows in the pictures if nobody addresses it.
Preparation also builds trust before the wedding. The couple learns how you work, and you learn how they behave in front of a camera. Both are useful to know before the big day.
In India, pre-wedding shoots can involve travel, several outfits, props and sometimes a small crew. That makes planning even more worthwhile. Agree the number of looks, locations and travel in advance, and put it in writing.
Outfits
Clothing is the part couples worry about most.
- Choose clothes they feel good in, since comfort shows in posture and expression.
- Colours should complement each other without matching. Think of the same palette, not the same colour.
- Solid colours and soft textures photograph well. Large logos, loud patterns and very thin stripes can distract.
- Bring a second look if the plan includes one, and pack anything needed to change, such as shoes and accessories.
- Think about movement. A full skirt, a dupatta or a jacket can add shape in the wind or when walking.
- Iron or steam clothes before the day.

Location and timing
Pick a place that means something to the couple or suits the style they like. Parks, beaches, old streets, their favourite cafe or home all work.
- Time of day: The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give softer light. Midday sun is harder to manage.
- Weather plan: Offer a backup date or an indoor option.
- Permissions: Some locations need permits or a fee, particularly monuments, public gardens and private venues. Check before you promise it.
- Travel: Say how long it takes to move between spots and who arranges transport.
- Crowds: Weekday mornings are often calmer than weekends.
Meet at a place with easy parking and a quiet spot to start, so the couple can settle in before the camera comes out.
Posing comfort
Reassure the couple that you will guide them. Few people know how to pose, and no one should be expected to.
Tell them:
- You will give simple directions, such as walking together, laughing at a private joke or leaning into each other.
- It takes about 15 minutes to feel natural, so the first photos are often not the best ones.
- They can ask for a break, water or a re-do at any time.
- Candid moments matter as much as posed ones.
A few tips to share:
- Talk to each other, not to the camera.
- Breathe out and drop your shoulders before a pose.
- Hold hands, walk slowly and whisper something silly.
- Do not worry about what to do with your hands. Hold each other, or hold a coffee.
Guide to send
Copy and adapt this. It is an example.
Your engagement session: what to know When and where: Saturday at 6:00 pm at the lake entrance. Please arrive 10 minutes early. If it rains, we will move to Sunday at the same time. What to wear: Two outfits you love, in colours that go well together. Avoid large logos and very busy patterns. What to bring: Water, comfortable shoes for walking and anything meaningful to you, like a ring box or a favourite scarf. How it works: We will walk and chat, and I will give you easy directions. The first few minutes can feel awkward. That is normal, and it passes. After the session: You will get a gallery of edited photos within 14 days. If you have questions, just reply to this email.
Adjust the delivery time to what you promise in your contract. Our day-before reminder post has wording for the final nudge.
Practical points to confirm
- Who is paying for travel, entry fees or props?
- Is hair and make-up included or arranged by the couple?
- Are friends, family or pets welcome? Many couples relax more alone.
- What happens if one of them is running late?
If your engagement shoot is included in a wedding package, repeat the details in the booking so there are no surprises later. Many studios also check that they are covered for working at public or private locations. See our post on liability insurance for general points to ask your adviser.
How ClickBook helps
ClickBook can hold the prep guide with the job, and the couple gets proposals, contracts and invoices from one private link on their phone. See how it works in a demo. The guide itself works equally well as an email or a shared document.
A good guide is the first stage of a smooth process. For the rest of the process around it, read our post on client onboarding.
Frequently asked questions
What should couples wear to an engagement shoot?
Outfits they feel comfortable in, in colours that suit each other without matching exactly. Plan two looks if time allows, and avoid large logos and busy patterns.
How long is an engagement session?
One to two hours is common, depending on locations and how many outfit changes you plan. Allow extra time for travel and for a couple who need time to warm up.
When is the best time of day for an engagement shoot?
Usually the hour or two after sunrise or before sunset, when light is softer. Your location and season will change that, so choose a time that suits the place.
Should I send the guide before or after the booking?
After. Send it as soon as the session is confirmed, then a short reminder a few days before.
